Butte College Prepares Students for Mass Casualty Incidents

Butte College PreparesStudents for Mass Casualty Incidents

Butte College fire, nursing, and EMT programs will be participating in a combined "mock" drill on Wednesday, December 9. A media/visual opportunity will be available rain or shine from 1-3 p.m. at the public safety training grounds, 3536 Butte Campus Drive.

There will be visuals and a scenario will take place at 2 p.m. with a mock fire in the high-rise tower. The simulation will include Fire, Paramedics, and Nursing program students who are involved in interdisciplinary simulations to improve collaboration, communication and problem solving among students.

One learning objective of these kinds of simulations is to facilitate a mutual and professional respect among the various professionals in an educational setting that would be modeled in clinical practice.

Each discipline determines the expectations and the perceived roles their students would have within the simulation.

The simulation allows students the opportunity to interact with each other to provide safe and effective care for a patient with various needs. Post-simulation debriefing allows students to discuss how care was prioritized and coordinated by the team.
